The Ascent PS5 Gameplay Review

Mike Alexander
The Ascent PS5 Gameplay Preview. We take a deep dive on The Ascent, coming to Playstation this march. We look at the PS5 graphics, gameplay and mechanics for the Ascent on its PS5 and PS4 releases.

I’ll admit it, I’m a total sucker for the cyberpunk genre. I saw Blade Runner when I was 7, and it infected my little mind with an obsession for neon lights, flying cars, robots that pretend to be humans, and humans who are part robot. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Ruiner are some of my most played games for this reason, and a new release very easily caught my eye and attention. That game is The Ascent by Neon Giant. It is similar to Ruiner in that it is an isometric, twin-stick shooter, but it is unique in that it will have you crawling through the cyberpunk rendition of Diablo dungeons and fighting all kinds of mutated menaces and robotic renegades. The game was released last summer for Xbox and PC, but that timed exclusivity is coming to an end, and the game will be available on PS4 and PS5 very shortly. Let’s see what makes this Cyberpunk experience so exciting.

Co-Op Cyberpunk

One of the game’s main draws, besides its setting, is the fact that the entire game is designed to be played solo or with up to 3 friends. Whether local or online, you can experience all of the action of The Ascent with 4 player co-op, teaming up with your friends to loot techno dungeons and fight all kinds of enemies, including many awesome boss fights. From what I’ve played, The Ascent can get pretty difficult, so it would be a good idea to play it with a friend so you have someone to revive you when you’re downed.

Isometric Gameplay

From the game’s announcement, it was easy to see that the developers were going for a sci-fi Diablo game, and that vision has been fully realized in the final release. That classic perspective gives you a great view of the techno-scapes you’ll be exploring, as well as the many enemies you will have to fight using tried-and-true twin-stick gunplay. As I said before though, The Ascent can get difficult. Thankfully, you have many options at your disposal for any engagement, including taking cover and shooting over it, utilizing destructible environments to gain the upper hand, and using a mixture of weapons and gadgets to keep your enemies on their heels.

RPG Stylings

In classic RPG style, you will be able to create your own character from the outset of the adventure. You’ll have many different hair, skin, clothing, and transhuman options to create your avatar and make them personal to you. Also In classic RPG style in the vast number of colorful characters you will meet. From vendors and quest givers, enemies and allies, the NPCs will run the gamut from slum-living, robotically enhanced gangsters, to powerful upper crust inhabitants who control your world with money and influence.

If you somehow have an opening for a game to play in these first few, incredibly busy months in video game releases, I’d recommend giving The Ascent a shot. It had a few issues upon its original release, but a year of patches later and a brand new platform will probably make it the experience it was always meant to be. The Ascent releases on PS4 and PS5 on March 24th, 2022.
