Included with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription alongside other benefits is access to the Game Trials events; when members can play the full version of a select game for a limited time only, completely free of charge. Unlike demo versions of games on the eShop, Game Trials offers the entire complete game, usually playable for about a week before the trial period ends.
Game trials on paper is a very good service and does create incentives to actually subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, a service that hasn’t exactly got the best reputation as far as console online subscriptions go.
On paper the service sounds great – but Nintendo being… well… Nintendo, the Game Trials service has arguably not seen any ‘good’ games featured since its conception.
However, this could start to change if recent events are anything to go by, and we might start to see actual good games featured on the Game Trials service.
In just over a month prior to writing this article, some fairly decent and high-profile titles have been featured free-to-play for a limited amount of time for Nintendo Switch Online members outside of Japan; most notably Fuser, Two Point Hospital, and the massively popular Among Us. None of these games are particularly platform-favorites for the Nintendo Switch, but they are a hell of a lot better than most of the titles released on the service.
For the Japanese eShop Nintendo Switch Online members however, the line-up of games featured in the Game Trials service is drastically different, and oftentimes get completely different releases altogether. The biggest hint that we could potentially see bigger and better titles on the service comes straight from the latest addition to Japan’s Game Trials features – Minecraft Dungeons.
Now, Minecraft Dungeons is not exactly a critically acclaimed game, nor is it a game that is high up on everyone’s wish list. However, it cannot be argued that Minecraft Dungeons is a fairly high-profile game, attached to an even larger – and one of the world’s biggest should I add – multi-platform titles, Minecraft.
If the recent additions to the West’s iteration of Nintendo’s Game Trials service in combination with anecdotal evidence from Japan’s Minecraft Dungeons free trial offer are anything to go by, then we could potentially start to expect more similarly acclaimed titles to the service. Obviously, don’t get your hopes up if you want a Breath of the Wild trial – but who knows, we can only wait and see what Nintendo will have to offer players outside of Japan in the weeks to come.
