MADiSON PS5 Gameplay Preview. We take a closer look at MADiSON on the PlayStation 5. Previewing MADiSON PS5 Gameplay, graphics, mechanics and story. Is MADiSON on the PS5 worth playing and a worthy addition to the PlayStation line up?

You wake up in a dark room. You check yourself for wounds stand up, and feel your way to a wall to hopefully find an exit. As your hands pass over flaking paint and chipped wood, you find a door, which to your horror is locked. As the panic sets in, you hear a voice over your shoulder. A forced, gargling voice that makes the hairs on your neck stand on end. This entity has a job for you, one you won’t like, and one that will require you to do unfathomable things. The entity, a demonic spirit, needs your help to complete a ritual that was started many years ago. It has you trapped so you don’t have much choice.

This is the setup for MADiSON, a psychological horror game from the Argentinian game development studio BLOODIOUS Games. MADiSON fits snugly into the genre of “first-person horror-puzzler” that was inspired by the release of P.T., the Playable Trailer for the infamously canceled Silent Hills game Hideo Kojima was developing. At first glance, MADiSON looks like it could be either Allison Road or Visage, but there is much more going on here. Let’s take a look at some of the things horror fans can be excited about in MADiSON.

Camera Obscura

The defining mechanic of MADiSON appears to be the Polaroid camera that Luca, the protagonist, carries around. This camera can be used to solve puzzles, reveal secrets in the environment, or defend yourself in the style of Fatal Frame if the game’s trailer is to be believed. The one thing the camera reveals in the game’s trailer is what appears to be the antagonist of the story, a pale-skinned ghoul with sharp teeth and a bad habit of phasing in and out of view.

The gameplay trailer for MADiSON also reveals a time-traveling mechanic, where the protagonist takes pictures of a year posted on a wall and is then transported to that version of the sprawling house-like prison they are inhabiting. Also in these alternate times are different versions of the entity that is haunting you, which is good for adding variety to the scares you will no doubt have to endure. The camera seems like it will be an interesting gameplay twist when compared to MADiSON’s contemporaries, and if the lack of information surrounding the game is anything to go by, BLOODIOUS has some truly terrifying things they want to keep secret.

An Impossible House

Another carryover from P.T. that MADiSON shares with other similar games is its mind-warping location. The game takes place entirely within a house, but as the story progresses you will find yourself transported to other locations that are both contained within and entirely separate from the house, dimensional shenanigans.

As you explore and progress, random events will trigger to either scare you or send you off track, and puzzles you encounter on one playthrough will change for others. These features ensure that the game has a high level of replayability.

MADiSON is shaping up to be an excellent successor to the P.T. throne, and the blood-soaked story it has to tell seems like it will get under your skin and stay there. Grab your camera and be brave when MADiSON launches on PS4, PS5, Xbox consoles, and PC on June 24th, with a Nintendo Switch version to follow several weeks after.
